Why Green Energy

Never has there been such a desperate need for clean, environmentally friendly and cost effective energy. With disasters like the recent gulf oil spill, global warming and the ever increasing financial and environmental cost associated with oil, coal and other fossil fuels converting our homes and businesses to green energy is becoming a real priority. Why has the move to alternative or green energy become such a major issue and how can and should we proceed to address these issues.

Green energy can be described as usable energy that does not produce environmentally damaging,

effects or by-products. Alternative energy is energy that does not rely on the use of traditional energy sources such as wood, oil, gas, coal or nuclear materials. The emphasis of green or alternative energy is on renewable energy with sources such as solar and wind power. Solar power from the Sun and wind power all around us does not rely on the resources that we will in time totally use up, such as oil, gas and coal. Using solar or wind power also produces none of the environmentally damaging by-products associated with fossil or nuclear fuels.

Another major reason green or alternative energy is becoming a priority is the high financial cost associated with using traditional fossil fuels. With current crude oil prices approaching a $100 a barrel or more and forcing the cost of gasoline for our cars and fuel oil to heat our homes to record levels, the pure financial cost of continued reliance on fossil fuels in huge. There is another very real cost associated with fossil fuels - as we import a high percentage of our oil from overseas we as a country and a people are held hostage to the whim of foreign governments and their leaders.

How Green Energy

Green energy takes on two major forms:

1) energy to power our cars, trucks and other transportation needs and

2) energy to power, heat and cool our homes, businesses, schools and other buildings.

Much has been said but much less has been done regarding green energy options for transportation. Even with the availability of "green vehicles" there is still a very heavy reliance on non-renewable fuel sources for our vehicles. We find ourselves heavily reliant on the auto makers if there is to be any significant reduction in our reliance on fossil fuels.

In the realm of green energy for our homes, businesses and other buildings some progress is being made. Many corporations, schools and other businesses are now considering and experimenting with alternative energy as both cost reduction and conservation options. In many parts of the country wind turbine power is now used as a significant power source. Businesses continue to look to solar, wind and experimental sources such as fuel cells as a way to cut their energy cost.

For homeowners, commercially installed alternative energy is still a very expensive option beyond the financial reach of most. However, the option of do-it-yourself solar energy and wind energy for conversion to green energy homes is on the rise. Green Energy is Much More Than a Pipe Dream!


When talking about green energy, what are we really talking about? In a nutshell, green energy is energy that comes from any one of the following renewable energy sources: wind, Sun/Solar, water/ hydroelectric, geothermal, biofuels and biomass energy. There is no way that you are not going to find some form of green energy in play anywhere in the world at any given moment. This article will discuss how each renewable energy source is considered to be green energy, starting with wind power.

Geothermal Energy

Although geothermal energy is not as widely used as the others are it is a green energy source; as it comes from the movement of the magma beneath the Earth's crust and from the volcanic activity all over the planet. The hot springs that have been created and kept warm all over the planet are clear cut evidence of the geothermal energy that is there for the taking.

Water/ Hydroelectric Power

There is a great deal to be said for the worldwide appeal of hydroelectric power. As a matter of fact, there are not many countries on this planet where water is not being put to use to create the hydroelectric power that is so abundant and is also a source of green energy. The only way we will ever lose this renewable energy source is if our atmosphere gets stripped away and we have to deal with the full brunt of cosmic radiation that will evaporate our water. Hydroelectric power generation is precisely why the Hoover Dam was built in the first place folks!

Sun/Solar Power

You've got to admit that the power that our Sun provides is another readily available source of green energy for anyone who cares to take the time to get some solar panels that will harness this nearly endless supply of the renewable energy that we, as a planet, are beginning to look to. While some solar panels are not that cheap, you can find some that are within your price range. Look at all the solar powered items on the market already!

Wind Power

There are two main reasons why wind power and wind mill/wind turbine generated electricity are considered to be green energy: they will not be gone any time too soon and they do not cause any more pollution to or of the environment around us. There is always going to be a wind blowing somewhere and it really does not matter whether that wind is only a slight breeze or a brisk wind or hurricane/ tornado strength winds. Wind turbines are getting more and more popular as we begin really embracing green energy as a way of life.

Renewable Energy (Green Energy) For a Happy Earth Day


Every year on April 22, people around the world celebrate Earth Day with events that promote environmental health and sustainability. And since it was first observed in 1970, Earth Day has grown from a once-a-year holiday into an international movement that strives to ensure a healthy environment for our children and generations beyond.

Moving Toward Renewable Energy (Green Energy) Sources

One of the most effective ways of improving and maintaining the health of our planet is decreasing our dependence on fossil fuels and increasing our use of renewable energy (green energy) sources that, unlike fossil fuels, are inexhaustible. The most compelling reasons for moving toward renewable energy sources, says John Duffy, a professor and graduate coordinator of the Solar Engineering Program at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, are twofold:

Renewable energy (green energy) sources are generally cleaner than burning fossil fuels, thus reducing the emission of greenhouse gases that cause the serious global warming.

Supplies of fossil fuels are running out. No one can say with certainty when the world's oil production will peak, that is, when production will no longer meet or exceed demand, but many forecasters believe it will absolutely happen within the next few decades. Increasing our reliance on renewable energy (green energy) can be the key to avoiding devastating economic and social upheaval when that peaking occurs.

But what Are Renewable Energy Sources?

Of the numerous energy sources that are considered renewable, some of the most widely used at this time include the following:

Solar: Solar energy, or solar power, which is provided by the sun, can be passive, such as maximizing south-facing windows to heat rooms, or photovoltaic (pv), using special equipment to collect the sun's energy and transform it into electricity. Photovoltaic (pv) energy is still relatively expensive, says Duffy, but it can be cost effective in remote areas off the main electric grid. Photovoltaic energy has been gaining popularity throughout the world in recent decades, with strong demand in Japan and much of Europe. Among the most efficient uses for photovoltaic solar power, says Duffy, is heating water. "In most places in the United States where people heat their water with electricity," Duffy notes, "they could actually save money over a reasonable number of years with solar systems."

Wind: Harnessing the power of wind to produce electricity is perhaps the fastest growing renewable energy source in the world. Wind power is clean. Wind energy is been used for centuries in many parts of the world, and in areas where high winds are prevalent, says Duffy, wind power can actually cost less than electricity produced by burning fossil fuels.

Geothermal: Geothermal energy comes from heat deep in the earth's crust which rises toward the surface producing hot water and steam. In areas where good geothermal resources exist, including many parts of the western United States, the heated groundwater can be used directly to heat homes and other buildings, or it can be used in power plants to produce electricity.

Biomass: Biomass, or bioenergy, refers to solar energy that has been stored in organic materials such as plant matter and animal waste. Biomass (bioenergy) is considered renewable because it develops more quickly than fossil fuels, which take millions of years to form. Electricity, heat, steam, and some fuels can be produced from biomass sources.

The Future of Renewable Energy (green energy)

A great deal of effort is being devoted worldwide to developing new and/or improved sources of renewable energy. For instance:

Cheaper Photovoltaic (PV) Cells: The late Sukant K. Tripathy, a chemistry professor and colleague of Duffy's at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, helped found a company whose goal is to produce inexpensive photovoltaic cells using plastic rather than silicone. Produced in rolls, Duffy explains, the photovoltaic cells would be easy to install and could be used in a variety of forms. "You could even make clothes out of the things," he says, "so you would produce electricity from your cap or your shirt."

Fuel Cells: Fuel cells generate electricity using a combination of oxygen (air) and fuel (most commonly hydrogen). This technology is very clean, producing only water and heat (in addition to electricity) as byproducts. At this point, fuel cells technology is relatively expensive, but a great deal of research is underway to make fuel cells technology more efficient and affordable. Fuel cells are promising as an environmentally clean method of powering vehicles, and they can also be adapted to power cell phones and other small electronics.

Reconsidering Conservation

With all this talk about renewable energy (green energy), it's easy to overlook the impact each of us can have simply by using energy more efficiently. While the word "conservation" often invokes images of the 1970s when we were told to turn down the heat and put on a sweater (still not a bad idea!), energy efficiency is an idea that deserves more attention.

Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs: Incandescent lights, for example, produce more heat than light, making them extremely inefficient (and expensive!) light sources. A comparison by the Consumer Energy Center, using data from the U.S. Department of Energy, shows that using a $0.75 incandescent bulb for four hours a day over a three-year period will cost the consumer approximately $39.54, including electric bills and about six replacement bulbs. The same lighting from an $11.00 compact fluorescent bulb will cost $19.06 over the same time period, and you won't have to change it for over six years!

Simple Lifestyle Changes: Using human energy, for example, walking and bicycling rather than driving, is healthy for people and our planet. Rather than driving to the gym and spending thirty minutes on the Stairmaster twice a week, why not shun the elevator for the stairs at work? And other simple changes such as turning off lights when you leave a room, keeping doors closed during cold weather, and making sure windows are sealed effectively can go a long way toward reducing our dependence on fossil fuels.

A Healthy Future for Our Kids

It's never too early to introduce children to simple conservation habits and renewable energy (green energy) use. If our kids get familiar with renewable energy, says Duffy, they'll be more likely to use it as adults. Besides, scientists and engineers must continue to develop increasingly effective sources of renewable energy (green energy), and most of the world's future energy innovators are the children of today.

Green Energy - What is it, What is it Good For and Why Do We Need It?


What exactly is meant by green energy? Green energy is energy that is produced so that it has less of an impact on the environment than traditional energy sources, such as the energy produced by the burning of fossil fuels. Creating energy by burning fossil fuels often has negative unwanted side effects, such as millions of tons of air pollutants spewed into the atmosphere by electric plants. Types of energies that people are generally referring to when using the term "Green Energy" are describing energy produced by wind, solar, hydro and geothermal processes. Some people even include nuclear energy in the discussion category of green energy. Others do not include nuclear energy because of the potential for nuclear accidents and environmental catastrophes.

Green energy is categorized as green because it is basically derived from renewable energy sources which produce much less of a pollution impact on our environment both in obtaining the energy source, and in using the energy source. If you would compare green energies to the fossil fuels of coal and oil, it becomes crystal clear the differences between green energy and fossil fuel non-green energy.

To convert coal into electricity for us to use in our homes and offices there are a negative environmental impacts. First, the coal has to be acquired. This usually means that it must be dug out of the ground in some manner or other. One of the ways that this is done, is with a technique called strip mining, which is a procedure that is very not nice to the environment. Once the coal is acquired by somehow digging out of the ground, it next must be burned at a power plant where the heat is used to create steam which turns turbines which creates electricity. Burning this coal, even the so called "clean" coal creates all sorts of air quality problems and some think leads to global warming.

When petroleum oil is used to fuel our cars, airplanes, trucks, trains, etc., there are a few instances where there is negative impact on our environment. First, the petroleum must be pumped out of the ground and transported to where it can be used. This entire procedure has great potential for environmental disaster from leaks from the oil wells and spillage from the shipping tanker carriers. Just take a look at the environmental disaster BP caused in the Spring-Summer of 2010 when they pumped millions of barrels of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico from their oil well and onto the shores of the southern United States. When petroleum is burned to power our cars, airplanes, trucks, trains, etc., there is another instance of negative environmental impact. These fuels do not burn cleanly. They dump carbon monoxide into the air that we breathe at an astonishing rate.

We need to convert to green energy for a number of reasons. First, we need to stop raping and pillaging our lands with the techniques that we use to get coal out of the ground. We need to stop burning this coal to create electricity and causing air pollution which not only effects every breath that we take, but also has a tremendous negative environmental impact on the entire atmosphere of earth. Second, we need to stop spilling oil into our seas and oceans, destroying our coastlines and killing countless number of sea life and sea birds. We need to stop burning all this petroleum to move our vehicles because of the negative impact to our air quality. Third, we need to stop using these fuels because to acquire many of them, we are having to deal with foreign countries that may not have the best interests of America foremost in their minds.

At present, we have the technology required that would allow us as a whole to use less fossil fuels and more green energy. We just need to insist that the conversion to these processes be started now so that we can make the switch to the greener energy as soon as possible. One way that we as individuals can help move this along is to add solar energy or wind energy to our homes and businesses. By doing so we can reduce our consumption of fossil fuels and reduce our negative impact on the environment.

Robert Bryce's Myths About Green Energy


Our energy needs will best be served by a mixture of traditional and alternate energy sources and we should not let Mr. Bryce's opinions keep us from developing the alternate sources.

Robert Bryce, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, has written a number of entertaining books and articles about the energy industry. However, his latest book, Power Hungry: The Myths of Green Energy and the Real Fuels of the Future, is an attack on Green Energy. It is not surprising that he is not a fan of green energy as the Manhattan Institute receives large donations from the Koch Foundation and Exxon/Mobile. That may not mean he is biased, but Mr. Bryce's latest article, 5 Myths about Green Energy, would make one wonder. He uses false comparisons, misquotes, scientific inaccuracies, and the omission of pertinent facts to try to make his case. Most myths are based on a small element of truth, but what Mr. Bryce claims as myths are mostly true and he has had to stretch to find reasons they are myths. You can judge. His five myths are:

Myth 1. Solar and wind power are the greenest of them all. Actually, they are. If you trace the energy back to its source, you will find that all fossil fuel energy originally came from the sun's energy. Photosynthetic green plants formed fossil fuels by converting CO2 to carbon compounds and oxygen over many millions of years and it is stored beneath the Earth. Wind energy and hydroelectric energy come from the Sun as well and using solar energy directly cuts out carbon as the middleman. That avoids many of the problems we have today with diminishing supplies and environmental damage from fossil fuel use. Mr. Bryce criticizes solar and wind power for the huge amounts of land to deliver relatively small amounts of energy. It seems a stretch when he compares the watts/area of wind farms with that of a gas well. What is the area of a gas well? And, what would he make of the Gulf oil spill that has produced no energy but covers an area the size of New Jersey? Mr. Bryce also says that because the wind doesn't always blow, utilities must use gas- or coal-fired generators to offset wind's unreliability and the result is minimal - or no - carbon dioxide reduction. Actually, no one is denying the need for back-up sources but surely the alternate energy placed on the grid reduces the need for an equivalent amount of energy from fossil fuels.

Trying to make his point, Mr. Bryce goes on that Denmark, the poster child for wind energy boosters, more than doubled its production of wind energy between 1999 and 2007. Yet he says data from Energinet.dk, the operator of Denmark's natural gas and electricity grids, show that carbon dioxide emissions from electricity generation in 2007 were at about the same level as they were back in 1990 before the country began its frenzied construction of turbines. That's wrong. The truth is that Energinet.dk's 2007 Environmental Report says that from 1990 to 2007, CO2 emissions in Denmark were not flat but had an overall reduction of 23%. For comparison, the US's CO2 emissions rose by 19% during that time.

Myth 2. Going green will reduce our dependence on imports from unsavory regimes. You would think this would be about importing 70% of our oil from the Middle East - but it's not. It is about importing rare earth metals needed for green technology from China. Mr. Bryce does not mention that we now import the metals anyway and that reducing our use of these as catalysts in the fossil fuel industry would more than make up for increased use in green technology. Also, perhaps, we should not consider our biggest creditor as unsavory.

Myth 3. A green American economy will create green American jobs. It's true, as Mr. Bryce claims, that many of the manufacturing jobs for solar panels and windmills have gone abroad because of high labor costs in the US. However, for many years, the US did not have a sound energy policy and certainly did not promote the development of green energy. If the US had subsidized the production of alternate energy sources at even a fraction of what it subsidized the fossil fuel production, many of the green jobs would have stayed at home. Still, some manufacturing is done here and the installation, maintenance, and the business end of green energy cannot be outsourced. Mr. Bryce also brings up the fact that the use of ethanol fuel only created 27,000 jobs rather than the 136,000 jobs a lobbying group predicted. A lobbyist's claim is a strange standard to measure by and he neglects that ethanol was necessary to replace the lead and MTBE as antiknock compounds in gasoline.

Myth 4. Electric cars will substantially reduce demand for oil. While admitting that the electric car has long been recognized as the ideal because it is cleaner and quieter and much more economical, Mr. Bryce criticize them because he says the same unreliability of electric car batteries that flummoxed Thomas Edison persists today. Mr. Bryce does not seem to realize that there have been a few improvements to batteries since Edison, such as the lithium ion battery he mentions in the article. He claims another problem is that the GAO reported that about 40 percent of consumers do not have access to an outlet, near their vehicle at home. Eh? Is there a serious shortage of electricians or extension cords? He also claims that electric cars are sidelined by physics and math. This, he says, is because gasoline contains about 80 times as much energy by weight as the best lithium-ion battery. He neglects to say that you can use gasoline just once while the battery can be recharged hundred of times. Besides, a battery is just a storage device - one that can convert energy to work much more efficiently than an internal combustion engine.

He does say, "Sure, the electric motor is more efficient than the internal combustion engine. " Isn't efficiency what it is about? The internal combustion engine is about 10% efficient at converting heat to work. A fossil fueled power plant, including transmission losses, is about 25% efficient, and electric motors are about 90% efficient. Considering that, electric cars are over twice as efficient in converting fuel to work even if fossil fuels are used to produce the electricity. If alternate energy sources produced the electricity, we would reduce our demand for fossil fuels even more.

Myth 5. The United States lags behind other rich countries in going green. Mr. Bryce says that over the past three decades, the United States has improved its energy efficiency as much as or more than other developed countries, except Switzerland and Denmark, and that the United States achieved it without participating in the Kyoto Protocol or creating an emissions trading system like the one employed in Europe. He compares the reduction in CO2 emitted per dollar of GDP as a basis for this claim. He does not mention that we have much further to go. The US has 6% of the world's population but uses over 30% of the world's energy.

Mr. Bryce writes as if our fossil fuel supplies will last forever and as if there are no environmental problems with their use. His plan for alternate energy is for the United States to continue going green by simply allowing engineers and entrepreneurs to do what they do best: make products that are faster, cheaper and more efficient than the ones they made the year before. I could almost agree with that if we subsidize all energy sources at the same level and charge each source fairly for the pollution it produces. Our energy needs will best be served by a mixture of traditional and alternate energy sources and we should not let Mr. Bryce's opinions keep us from developing the alternate sources.

Lately, the internet is flooded by green energy reviews that are encouraging people to make a switch and be more responsible. However, what does it really mean when you say green energy? How come it is green?

Green energy is a classification which covers all forms and sources that are are known as non-polluting and therefore environment friendly. Common examples of eco-friendly power sources are geothermal, wind, solar, and hydro sources. Nuclear power can also be classified as green energy because of the amount of energy it can produce with very minimal costs. Nuclear power possesses the two main requirements from an energy source to be considered green, and those are low carbon emissions and little pollution. Many though argue that nuclear energy should not be labeled green because of the dangers it poses like radiation, radioactive wastes and possible reactor meltdowns.

Green energy is mostly considered when it comes to the production of electrical power. The United Nations is the world's leader in the campaign to promote widespread use of green energy.
